INTERCULTURAL DESIGN
INSTRUCTIONS
CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT – PROJECT 1 (PROPOSAL)
Requirements
The general theme is “Cultural Sensitivity in Design”
- Study a cultural phenomenon or a particular subculture that is perceived as ‘sensitive’, and “frame” we study within the chosen theme.
- Convey this cultural aspect without altering the actual facts but within a presentable interpretation and adaptation that raises awareness from the viewers.
- Produce some preliminary ideas on how to visually express your interpretation using design language. Each idea is to be supported by a short rationale. Conduct visual research to help expand your idea generation.
We did research on several themes at first and then voted on the one we were most interested in. I have done research about the tea ceremony and wrote a proposal for it. All of us have taken part in presenting our proposal. Then our group leader have a consultation with our lecturer.
Our group has chosen Navigating Japanese Manners: A Guide to Dos and Don'ts for Cultural Etiquette as the theme we are going to research after getting feedback from lecturers.
CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT – PROJECT 2 (FIELD STUDY)
Requirements
We are required to collect visual, oral, textual and tactile artefacts that would be part of our research materials for the ideation in Project 1 (proposal). All collected artefacts and materials must be
recorded, kept and documented, accompanied by necessary information such as the type of artefact and material, its purpose, its symbolism, its cultural/historical background, and more, depending on
the kind of artefact and material.
Data Collection Methods
Some of the methods by which we can collect data:
• Observation study.
• Interview of relevant stakeholders (from the lecture series, we may approach any of the guest speakers for an interview, if we deem their presentation useful for further research).
• Online and/or actual physical material* visual research of the selected culture (the people/arts/symbols/architecture/text/calligraphy etc.)
Our group take pictures of the bulletin board and placard in Japan to navigate Dos and Don'ts for cultural etiquette in Japan.

FINAL ASSESSMENT – FINAL PROJECT & PORTFOLIO
Requirements
Utilising the data collected from the research trip, we need to produce visual design outcomes that reflect our interpretation and definition of “Framing”, bearing in mind to consider cultural and
aesthetic aspects, balanced with our design knowledge. Various directions and approaches can be engaged in, such as experimental design/art with the use of manual/digital or combination of both media.
We put the information and images we had gathered in Canva slides. Then, everyone comes out with some ideation to design our final outcome. We decided to do a student guidebook in magazine form. The guidebook is about the similarities and differences between Malaysia and Japan cultures.
