TASK 2 - VISUAL ANALYSIS

This task requires us to assess, investigate, document and analyze the existing art/design work we selected in Task 1. We will study the design principles found in that work, as well as the size, placement, purpose, effectiveness of the design in relation to the UNSDG goal that we have chosen.

Symmetrically Balance, Rays of Light Point Towards the Seabed

This design work is in portrait format. In the top right corner, there is a circle representing the surface of the sea, where three divers and a school of fish are present. On the left side of the painting, there are polygons representing the rays of light casting from the sea surface to the seabed. The illustration is surrounded by circles adorned with colorful seaweeds and corals. In terms of visual elements, the main colors observed are teal, green, magenta, and red. Overall, it is a colorful design. Swirly, organic lines are applied throughout the composition.

This design is symmetrically balanced. The focus is on the scenery of an underwater cave, with the artist using colorful corals and seaweed to attract the viewer's attention. The rays of light from the surface and the shadows of divers also point towards the seabed, bringing the focus down to the ocean floor. As one observes the corals and seaweed, they are led by their lines towards the diminishing circles of the underwater cave, and subsequently to the divers and schools of fish in the bright area at the surface. A repetition of corals and seaweed is found throughout the overall image. There is unity in the composition, as the arrangement of objects complements one another. There is proportion in the layout, creating a hierarchy—first, we see the image in the largest size, followed by the minute details.

The artist posted this illustration on Pixiv on May 20, 2020. This image showcases the magnificent scenery from the underwater cave to the surface of the sea. The marine life in the picture is depicted vividly. The purpose of the artist in creating this artwork is to share the beauty of the underwater cave with viewers. It closely relates to United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14 as it reminds people of the importance of protecting marine ecosystems and preventing ocean pollution.

Feedback from the lecturer: A little bit too many words. It will be better to export the things I have in my Miro board and put them in my blog as some audience might not have Miro board.
