TASK 3

Google Slides

In this task, I am designing a typeface about music.

Problem: In YouTube music videos, there is usually a lyric display, but the font for the lyrics is different in each video.

Solution: Explore a typeface that is more interesting and relevant to music.

I use notes in sheet music as a reference.

After Mr.Vinor's feedback, I fixed my design in class.

At first, I changed the color of the box so that all font applications looked consistent. I realized that the color of the image at the top did not match the color of the box. So I changed the image at the top so that it looked better.

I thought it looked weird, so I changed the place to fill the color.

FEEDBACK

Week 9 General Feedback: The process should be recorded. Specific Feedback: It will be easier if just convert to a specific video. The thin and thick strokes have to be consistent. For example, if one vertical stroke is thick, all vertical strokes should be thick.

Week 10 General Feedback: Compare the lowercase with uppercase. Specific Feedback: W is incorrect. Put the uppercase beside while working with lowercase.

Week 11 Specific Feedback: Comma should be thicker, letter s is weird.

Week 12
Specific Feedback:
Just use a normal typeface to show information and put it in small point size.

Week 13 Specific Feedback: Focus on the typeface, not the graphic. Colour needs to be consistent.

Week 14 Specific Feedback: The kerning of uppercase is too tight.

REFLECTIONS

Experience
I really liked this task because I can design my own typeface. I'm quite satisfied with the things that I designed. The outcome stayed true to my vision. This task was very beneficial because I'll be using this new type of design in my future work. The most difficult part of this task was the generation of the font in FontForge as I hadn't used it before and I am not familiar with it. I was quite stressed about doing this task on time as I had to manage my time to do final projects from different modules. We had Design Research Methodology (quite a heavy module) due right before Task 3. I never expected to struggle with time because I had always managed my work well in semester 1.

Observation
With this task, I was reminded to observe the thick and thin of the strokes so that the typeface was consistent. I also realized that the size of the letters should be well controlled so that it won't look weird. Besides, I learned that the design principles of color and texture were implemented in the type.

Findings
I found that fonts with graphical elements are not that easy to design. The sizes of the letters were hard to control, I had to keep adjusting so that it wouldn't look weird and the letters don't hold together. In a sense, it is fun, yet also time-consuming and it gets tiring if a solution isn't formed after many arrangements. They're not easy to perfect because it is easy to create imbalance, especially with the graphical elements of my font design. Besides, I found that FontForge is a pain. I think it's because I'm new to using it and I am not familiar at all. I searched for tutorials Google for such a long time to fix the problem.
